Paying it forward

The Medicine Hat & District Health Foundation was honored to receive this beautiful crocheted afghan from a lady in memory of her father. Her father had been a patient at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital after a stroke and he had spent many months in 2 North rehabilitating. Creating the afghan, which was inspired by her father’s birth stone, was comforting, and now she wanted to pay that comfort forward by giving it to someone special.

The Health Foundation staff started on a quest to find the perfect home for this gift by reaching out to the 2 North department manager. We were told about a patient who, a month ago, had a stroke. This kind lady had a career as an occupational therapist before retirement and was now receiving occupational therapy care herself. This particular week was tough; her husband was admitted upstairs on 4 West, and they could only speak by phone due to the Covid-19 guidelines. The manager of 2 North and a member of the Health Foundation decided to present her with the afghan, and the joy on her face was priceless! The afghan was an inspiring way to lift the spirits of a deserving patient.
